St. Patty's Day

I had no idea how big this holiday was. I should have known when I was walking around before noon and almost tripped over the guy passed out on a cement block with his blackberry at his ear, but I just didn't know! This city comes alive to celebrate those pesky Irish snakes!

This is the corner by my house, think I took this around 10.30-11am!
Found the leprechaun!!

My day started with the NYC St. Patrick's Day parade (they claim it's the biggest in the world). It travels the length of 5th ave, and it lasts for quite some time. I followed it up from 57th to somewhere in the 70's. Really had fun playing like I was a tourist at times and taking pics and then playing like I lived here, head down-not noticing the commotion and pushing past the visitors on the street. Most of where I was the people were lining the street 5-10 people deep. Some were more interested in the social aspect of what they were wearing/drinking/which bar next and some were focused on the parade and the heritage/honor/history of what was being displayed.

This is the Apple store, just covered in people. And, no, none of these peeps wanted the new ipad!
Bergdorf. The parade is in the middle of the picture, the flags displayed all 50 states

At the plaza. I am standing 50ft from the curb here and it was the first opening for me to take a picture

Central Park

Next I went over to Mike and Gaby's for a true St. Patty's Day feast.

The girls-Gaby, Anna, Bren, and me
Ed and Marley. Had to take this pic because Marley is out and Ed was so proud of the green on his socks.
Bren and Judd-new friends. They are both educators who just moved here a year or so ago.
 Anna and Ben
Jay-he's a joint replacement guy that Mike knew from Cali and moved here for the year. His wife and baby (6mos) are back working in Cali, he and I usually bond over our significant others!
 Mike and Gab, still working!
The view from their apartment. You can see the cheese and veggie spread we started with in the background.

The corned beef and cabbage. The darker meat on the right was soaked in beer.
Soda bread. This was my favorite, so different and tasty. Gab and I talked about making the left overs French toast it was so sweet.
Salad with greens and green beans and tomatoes.
My contribution-green cookies. I came with a few more, but people just had to try them before we ate dinner.
The dessert table-stout cake and cookies with coffee and baileys. Note the green cups in the background-Mike borrowed them from work and they were ugly, typical styrofoam cups. Gaby, the thrifty crafter (her blog), covered them with green paper to make them festive. They were literally perfectly cut on the bias and sealed onto the cups. Amazing the work that went into the party-what a success and great St. Patty's Day here.

Sunday Shopping and Sight Seeing

Brunch was a must for these girls. So, to conquer central park and food-we headed to Sarabeth's one of my local favs. Have to say, they did not let me down! Everyone's food was devine-the french toast and mimosas especially!

Next shopping on 5th ave and Madison. Most damage done was at the Michael Kors store. It was like an adult candy store-everyone (all 8) found something they loved and think 4 or 5 made purchases. I fell in love with these flats in orange!!

After shopping, the rest of the team headed south to lady liberty. I went home to work a bit before dinner

Beauty and Essex was probably one of the best and funniest nights of my life. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and it was perfect to have the little food plates to share.

 The entire group.
 The older cousins
 My mom and her sisters
 All the cousins
My mom and me. Love this pic. Think she looks so gorgeous and peaceful!!

After dinner, we had to change locations for dessert in true Gagnon (maiden name) fashion.
Max Brenners in a CHOCOLATE factory-literally. You walk into tubs of chocolate being made and stirred, then the store that sells all the goods and then the restaurant. Wow-good marketing/space organization.

The fondue, note the flame in the back for the smores

My little cousin and I after another fun day. Love my family!!

Evening Plans

What else does one do when in NYC on a Saturday night? Dinner and a show of course!

Dinner was a VYNL. Local Times Square place, recommended by a friend. Good food, fun to have everyone together!

Did have it's own disco ball. Then off to Wicked. Always a good show! Great first day here all in all.

The Ride

My cousins had heard about "The Ride" prior to coming, so we looked it up and decided to give it a try. The Ride is an interactive greyhound bus with the seats facing sideways and lots of tvs and lights that takes you for a cruise through midtown and the west side with performers staged along the way. It was my cousin's 21st bday, so we asked The Ride for a little gift

Our tour guides. Basically amateur actors, who are still honing their craft and no quite funny yet...to put it nicely
 Our first view
We passed the Ghost stage, about to start up!
 Times square
Our first performer-the new years guy (in yellow coat). He has a happy 2012 hat on and kazoos
 The New Years crystal ball
 Tapping guy-our second performer.

Bank of America building, super eco friendly and the 2nd/3rd tallest in the city-see pic above
 The washed out Chrysler Building
 Grand Central
The UPS guy that brake dances (3rd performer) and somehow I missed the 4th guy. He was by far the best. He rapped on the street corner and was so good he was able to adjust to anyone who walked by and what anyone was doing. Very talented! He also incorporated a Happy Birthday section for my cousin, she was so surprised!!
The Hearst Building, again super eco friendly
Next performers, ballet music starts playing in the bus as we round Columbus Circle-look closely and you'll see the girl in pink is on point and dances while we round.
Finally, the last (unscheduled) performer-The Naked Cowboy!!

Fun loop around the city, may not be worth all the money, but definitely fun for all the NYC rookies.

8 women

My mom and her two sisters and their 4 daughters (my cousins) came to NYC last weekend. So fun to have all my girl relatives in one place. A few had never been here which always makes for a fun trip.

First night, everyone was in by 8, so we said local for some sushi and cocktails. We had the best time telling stories and catching up! Fun to hear how the younger ones react to old stories. Love the smiles on everyone's face

Saturday we started early in order to accomplish everything. First family subway trip!

Off to Soho for some shopping, the girls loved every store we walked past. They bought a few things, but we made sure they went to stores they didn't have (thank you h and m) for their purchases.

After shopping a while, we went to Chelsea to eat at Co. (pronounced company), a local NYC pizza place. The pizza is mostly locally grown and more "fancy" than your average pepperoni. Everyone had their own, so lots of flavors to try. I'd definitely go back, if I have time

This place is cool, super modern, simple and communal tables-ours held 14.

Waiting for food, I see that both my cousins are individually on their phones-hilarious. Later figure out they are posting to facebook the whole trip! This is a look that becomes standard
More happy faces. Glad to be out and about in NYC.
